Donald Culbertson, PA – Marfa, TX

I attended the MedEx Physician Assistant training program at the University of Washington Seattle class 33 graduating in 1998.

I have been working in Remote rural medicine in West Texas except for a 4 year stint in Manhattan.
In my early career I got to work in the Mexican border town of Presidio-Ojinaga, working in Spanish, alone, 120 miles from the nearest Doctor or medical facility.

Then there was a 4-year stint in Manhattan practicing AIDS medicine with HIV + teens at Columbia presbyterian Hospital in Harlem NY.

After NY I returned to Marfa Texas to work for a newly established FQHC. I had 4 different supervising physicians in as many years. That’s when I had the brilliant idea to take my life savings and open my own Mom and Pop clinic.

The Marfa Country Clinic was born, with my life partner Valerie at the helm on the books, Dr. Schwartz and I provided patient care. The Dr. and I were the perfect collaboration in that we both have complementary special powers while we had our own panel, we’d trade back and forth based on our skill set and preferences. Dr. Schwartz and I had a great 10-year run. He now works in New Zealand while I am running the clinic remotely. Valerie and I depend on our clinical staff to deliver the day to day patient care.
