Grant Wahl, an American sports journalist who covered soccer for CBS Sports from December 8, 1974, to December 9, 2022, was best known for his work as a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and a correspondent for Fox Sports. The Beckham Experiment, written by him, was another publication (2009).

His time at Sports Illustrated was primarily spent on American collegiate soccer and basketball. In 2011, Wahl competed for the FIFA presidency, however, he later dropped out of the race after failing to secure support from a football federation. 2020 saw him leave Sports Illustrated and launch his own newsletter, Substack.

While covering the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Wahl passed away on December 9, 2022.

He gained acclaim for his cover story “Where’s Daddy?” (1998), which documented the growing number of illegitimate children born to professional athletes. He was fired from Sports Illustrated in 2020 after criticizing the magazine’s CEO over pay cuts during the coronavirus pandemic. While covering the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Wahl was caught up in a crackdown in Qatar over his rainbow T-shirt.

American physician and medical journalist Céline R. Gounder was born on April 22, 1977. She focuses on infectious illnesses and global health. She was a member of Joe Biden’s COVID-19 Advisory Board transition team when he was set to become the next president of the United States.

Gounder studied infectious disease at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She is a member of the COVID-19 Advisory Board of U.S. president-elect Joe Biden. Gounder is an assistant professor at the NYU medical school.

Gounder was inducted into the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society in 2000. In 2010, she was awarded the W. Leight Thompson, MD Excellence in Research Award. She was listed in People Magazine’s 25 Women Changing the World in 2017 for her contributions to health care.

Grant Wahl, a sports journalist, and Gounder were wed from 2001 until Wahl’s untimely death in 2022. They have two dogs and resided in New York City.
